My 6/4 Holton was a detachable leadpipe as well and it too has a different type of sound than other 6/4's I have played. I have been fulling around with it today and the soldering of the pipe to the bell is not a bad thing at all seems like. The sound did not get darker at all just tighter and possibly a bit more focused. I think the biggest difference is in the low range. It is hard to say practicing in my home too, so I think I need to get it in the hall. I had a Besson 981 Eb before I purchased my MW45SLP and I had the leadpipe raised off it after purchasing the larger leadpipe and it made a dramatic change in sound. It became an easier horn to play, but I had F tuba on the brain.
