Isn't the band thing a funny attitude?
I'm not blaming this person, but one is far more likely to get a job playing tuba in a (military) band (and actually get treated with respect and paid with a respectable salary) than in any orchestra, and (Let's face it.) the tuba player's role in the symphony orchestra is grim when compared to the role of the tuba player in a band.
When one walks into a large c.d. outlet, the only band recordings one is likely to find would be those of the Eastman Wind Ensemble, but do you think that any of those students have any interest whatsoever in their "turn" at serving in this ensemble, rather than the upper classmen orchestra?...absolutely none (unless it is to be selected for the biannual trip to Japan).
