Sometimes you can inhale on beat 2 and hit the swing-eighth note pickup to 3 to resume the line, to make it sound like intentional rhythmic variation instead of just a hole. Sometimes you can anticipate a drum lick that would obliterate your note if you played it anyway; breath there. Sometimes you can anticpate what the soloist is heading for, and work around it. (Try not to inhale when the soloist is inhaling.) The best lesson that you can get for 4-beat tuba playing is Rich Matteson's recording with Louis Armstrong and the Dukes of Dixieland. No tubist should be without it. I believe it has been reissued on CD. Does anybody out there know where to get it?
