I agree with you, in some sense, with your "let go an just make music" claim. It is VERY important to first and foremost be a musician, even more than a tuba player.

However, many people i know who are proud of themselves for just "letting go" in their music, while they believe themselves to be making music, are actually just procuring shear crap. The worst case scenario is when these people give their advice to formative young musicians and they say "just let go, man (or woman)".

I just want to stress the fact that, while the music and your interpretation of it is the most important aspect of playing, one must still pay close attention to what they are doing physically and technically. That is why it is important for us to master the tuba to such a degree that we need not think about technical aspects.
