Joe S. has postulated and I'm inclined to agree that the bell has a lot to do with how a tuba sounds. A better bell can make a good tuba even better, or so it seems, and there is consequently some experimentation always going on.
But I'd bet Daellenbach didn't choose the carbon composite bell for its special sound. I suspect he chose it because despite advancing age he cavorts around the stage while playing, and the composite is light and durable.
