Yes, it's a great "Alpine Symphony", but not just because of the tuba playing involved. Although, it is a bit comical when you get to the climax of the "storm", and the thunder noises enter. What you see is a percussionist holding up and shaking something that looks like something you'd use to intensify your sun bathing - for that faster, all-over sun burn. It kind of sounds like a sheet of Reynolds Aluminum Wrap, with a microphone on it.
I also agree that Barenboim's Mahler 5th is really good - much, much better than when I saw Solti do it very late in his career.
