Ok, I don't think anyone is saying that they should ignore note names entirely. Yes, they should be learned, but they can be learned as you go. I was lucky on my switch from a sax that plays Eb Treble cleft to one in concert bass cleft. When I played a G on my sax, it sounded Bb (and was on the same line), when I played F#, it sounded (again, same line) So I had a trick to use in such cases.
Also, in this case, the director knows they won't know bass cleft right away. I still like the method of relating note names to fingerings, works well for me atleast. Intime, you won't need to use the long thought prosses for note names, it will come naturaly. And when you know that Bb is open, and see a natural in front of it in the music, you can easily realize B-natural, and ask someone what the fingering is (if needed).
Hey, atleast these kids have someone to help them, more than I had.
