First, my heart goes out to Tony and all the members of the San Jose Symphony. Secondly, these ARE bad times for orchestras. This year the Chicago Symphony has over a 1 million dollar deficit, the Philadelphia Orchestra had a 3.6 million dollar deficit, Saint Lous Symphony has been told they need to cut some weeks out of their season, the musicians of the Calgary Symphony are locked out and the Toronto Symphony may not have a season this year. The value of orchestra endowments have plummeted due to falling stock prices. Many orchestra board members have lost their jobs. Also the events of September 11th have left orchestras with poor ticket sales and dismal results from telemarketing. Many donors have generously given their usual pledge to the Red Cross and to other worthy charities. This is not 'buisiness a usual" for any orchestra during these times. I think we are all looking ahead to bad times in the symphonic world.
