I went to high school with some extraordinarily fine tubaists. Two of them went right out of high school into Army bands...one into the D.C. band and another into a base band in Germany. The latter and I used to POP notes out of our tubas in the band room during the time that we were SUPPOSED to be eating lunch. The requirement was that we would hold a lit match no closer than one inch past the bell rim centered over the tuba bell in the air and one MUST put out the match with the impact of the sound waves of their extremely quick, extremely punctuated, and incredibly loud "note".
The band director (back in his office trying to eat a sandwich) got mighty tired of this mighty fast...
