Some friends of mine and I did a listening test back in school of every tuba model in the building, specifically with the idea of hearing them as marching-style instruments. We went outside, the sousaphones were held normally, and the concert tubas were held so that their bells pointed towards the listeners, who had their backs turned.
I drew up a chart with, I think, eight criteria, and a numbered rating system that favored broad, clear, dark sounds with a lot of presence in the overall score. It was interesting to see how results varied from expectations.
