Looks like it's four guys' opinions, Pete...

I bought that recording, which, in a capitalist sense, is all that matters on a scale of success, but it disappointed me with its dirt and obvious engineering efforts. Sure is easy to sound huge when the mike's down your bell and the slider is up to eleven. Makes me wonder what the criteria are for a "great tuba recording"...

I'll put in a vote for the BBC Philharmonc's recording from 1996, conducted by Yan Pascal Tortelier, but apparently an "Exclusive CD available only with BBC Music Magazine". That would be a shame, since the engineering is transparently done, and the sense of ensemble is astounding. It's one of the things I play when I want to show someone what really good brass sounds like.
