Joe, I think you're on the right track, but there is one other way that might move things along without any hard feelings. Beau, perhaps you could offer to help him place the horn for sale on E-Bay, then you could competitively bid for it. As we've said before, E-Bay is the ultimate arbiter of the value of an item, so let the market rule! If it turns out that you want the instrument at the REAL market rate, you'll get it; regardless, your friend gets a worthy price for his instrument. In no case can he think you are taking advantage of his situation.
