only one person's opinions:

- The "short-action" aspect has nothing to do with it, except that short-action valves accompany BIG instruments, and of course bigger is ALWAYS better.

- I think tuba players have decided that upright bells are better than recording bells based on their personal playing experiences, in that they simply can hear themSELVES better with upright bells. Perhaps others like upright bells better because of bad tuba players, who don't quite sound so bad if their sound is going up to the ceiling, rather than splatting over the other players in the group.
