Easy: the bigger the number, the smaller the m.p. Conversely, a D.W. 1 is the biggest. "L" designates that it'll fit standard morris taper receivers. Without the "L", it's designed to fit the smaller British brass band receivers. Unless you own a Besson with the old, smaller receiver, you must be certain that to specify the "L" on your order.
I own both the "1L" and "2L" m.p.'s, and like them both. The 1L is a great orchestral toilet bowl. The 2L works real nice at church gigs and weddings, as long as you're not playing anything too technical (unless you're chops are in great shape) - you know, modern pieces where you have to leap around a whole bunch, and had wished that you had brought your "Bobo Solo" m.p. instead.
