I would definately not lie to them, but I wouldn't offer my negative criticism unless they asked for it. Only then would I give it and VERY tactfully. Try to point out whatever they did right, as well as what they need to work on. Alot of folks would be far too tempted to make fun of those people who did not play very well. I rank these people somewhere below that stuff that collects between your toes and dog droppings. I have also noticed that these individuals never get very far in music, because when a person believes they know everything, they lack the capacity to learn. That's what recital is for. It's a learning situation for musicians. It's a good thing to keep that in mind when opinions are given.
