I have owned the little yamaha F tuba (YFB 621) and think it sounds very small and light and maybe has some of the "old" f tuba characteristics and I have to say it has a WONDERFUL low range for its size. I sold it and bought the YFB 822 and that definately has a great low range. And for what it's worth, I don't think that the 822 has any better a low range than the 621, it is just bigger so it sounds more like a CC tuba. Anyway, my point is that the 621 is quite a nice litte F tuba with both the lightness of sound you guys are talking about in "old" f tubas and a great low register.
