There was an article in "The Instrumentalist" magazine years ago about leadpipe length, although I think the study was conducted on cornets. The theory given there was that a shorter leadpipe gives a faster, more direct response and that a longer leadpipe aids in intonation. I don't know if any studies have been made on this with tubas. There are so many variables in a tuba that it would be difficult to determine exactly how much of a difference a long, or short leadpipe would make. My big Conn and Alex have vast differences in leadpipe length, but they both play well with good-enough response and intonation. I'd like to hear other's thoughts on the matter, too.
