Here's an interesting article from IWK Austria, which started out to be a research paper on the differences between rotary and piston valves and came up with the conclusion that the valve type is immaterial; that most of the perceptible difference between rotary and piston trumpets (the instrument used) can be attributed solely to the length of the leadpipe before the valves.
