Funny that you mention the Canadian Brass in connection with this question. I have a reissue CD of there's called "CBC Radio Years", where the original founding members of the group were included in some of the cuts. According to the liner notes, one of them was Bill Phillips, who had started out in Canada playing trumpet in some orch.s there, moved to London to study conducting and led the London Gabrieli Brass Ensemble, AND was the soloist on the Beatles' Penny Lane. He then moved back to Canada, where he helped start the Canadian Brass, and after a couple of years was replaced by Fred Mills.
