Tinning helps best with small parts in my experiece.

Large areas are best soldered using the following method, unless like Matt indicates you want to add more solder to increase the weight: Clean the part to be soldered very well with buffing or a scratch pad, polish with a scotch brite pad/sand paper the outer edge of the guard, about 1/4" or so. Make sure the parts match well without too many large gaps. Heat the parts, apply flux, and then apply heat (torch) to the bow and indirectly to the guard. Allow the solder to flow along the line of the guard.

Fill in all large gaps slowly and not all at once. Clean the excess solder off and buff the solder stains off. Spot lacquer or spot silver plate.
