Somehow, we tend to read "fall back-on" as being quite negative. Over many years, workers have had to "fall back-on" some skill or other when the primary money making opportunity didn't pan out.

Many of us reading this board either went to school to major in music performance or in music education. We have continued to bury our heads in the sand about anything else. Only when confronted with the inevitability of a lost job, do we think that maybe, just maybe, we should have taken a few other courses (myself included). Whether it be an orchestral job or a teaching job, losing a job can be very detrimental to your mental and then physical health.

Here is a proposal for all of you youngsters. Besides taking your performance courses, take some business courses (accounting, business administration, marketing, ....); learn how to repair band or orchestra instruments; get certified in math or social studies or football or....; take computer courses; or, well, something you are either interested in or can see a need for in several years.

Sorry to you Michael about the orchestra situation.
