When "it is all about specialization"...there is the risk of NOT having either the skills or the inclination (or both) to allow YOUR skill set to be adapted by its context and the strengths and weaknesses of others. "I'm the marketing expert" can too easily equate into an orchestra seeing some boob squander 30 or 40 percent of the total monies raised and simply accept that as "operating expenses. After all, they are the experts"
My point was this, the average doke who has chosen to "specialize" may have short-changed themselves with their "focus"....to the point where they do not have the insight, skills, or inclination to assess the usefulness of anything other than "their field".....and perhaps is even at risk for too narrow a view IN their own fields!...The worst part though is when otherwise well-meaning people can, in a sense, stand idly by and accept mediocre performance by business peers, simply because they do not understand "the specialization."
A good simile for you to understand this? NO one gives the tubist in an orchestra slack simply because they do not understand all the nuances and challenges we endure as tuba-ists, right? So why is it then that many people regularly accept "expert opinion" in business, or community arts management, without a second thought. Usually because most folks have no sense of what "good" organizations do with for and by each other, with for and by their communities and they have no critical or systematic thinking skills with which to respond to "expert knowledge"!
