The only problem is that the majority of players, do a lot of pick up work, with more than one group. After all, how many FULL TIME tuba positions are there in the United States?....20?....30? Even then, some of the mid-sized orchestra's pay could benefit from some supplimenting, with quintet playing, and/or other freelance work. Quite a few good players end up cobbling together a career of pick up work.
