I'd prefer reading out of the hymnal. The individual parts don't have words in them, so it's bad times if you get lost.

With the hymnal, you can easily figure out where you are, and if the director says "Ok, lets sing the CHORUS one more time......well, you'll know where to play.

Plus, bass lines could get boring, and if you read treble clef, you can always improvise and play other parts, too.
