I would add the Miraphone 1291 to the list. I find it to have a sound between the typical "German" (should that be Czech?) sound of most rotary valve tubas, and the so-called American sound. I have never liked any of the Willson BBbs that I have played. I find it difficult to get much breadth to the sound on them, but I am a rank amateur so it could just be too much tuba for me. I also find them awkward to hold and play. I agree that the Jupiter and VMI are similar in sound and feel to the King.

Or for the really traditional "American" tuba sound ... get a Conn 20K sousaphone.
