There was also a business reason VHS won. Japan Victor (the originator of VHS) wanted modest licensing fees for using its patented technology. Sony (the originator of Beta) wanted high licensing fees for using their patented technology. The performance differences between the two technologies were too small to make up for the higher cost of Beta. The marketplace decided.
Hi-Fi VHS tape can record with high quality, but the tapes are fragile, and wear significantly if they are used often. These days, I think we are better off using any of the many digital recording methods.
