I live in a community of 200,000 in the city, about 400,000 in the metropolitan area. The string quartet in the orchestra get $22,000 per year, every one else maxes out at $6,000 AT MOST. Music Director/Principal Conductor gets $125,000 plus health club memberships plus $2,000 per month American Express allowance. Quite a disparity. And at the last negotiation of the master agreement, the Orchestra didn't want to give the musicians ANY raise at all. There is a sizeable operating deficit, just like there seems to be nearly everywhere else in the country.
