Although I have not seen it, I believe you are describing a 3XJ tuba. I have played a lot on a 1935-vintage 34J, a 4-top-piston (long-action).770" bore (more or less) tuba. The actual valve bore on some of these old Conns varies quite a bit. I have a Conn here that has variances in the valves from .772" to nearly .800", but it plays fine. Try a tuning bit and see if it helps - it probably will. I know that the "Wonder" models, ie., with top-pistons, used the tuning bit, but am unsure about the front-action "American" models. I have an upright 'naked lady' bell to fit the horn, so just e-mail me.
