If you could provide a little more info, I'm sure one of us could come up with a workable solution.

Which arm is bad?

Is it paralyzed, or amputated, or what? If amputated, where on the arm, and will he be getting a prosthetic?

Is this kid naturally a pretty bright, common-sensical kid?

What size is he? (A strapping corn-fed farm boy, or a little scrappy kid) Is he strong enough to hold a valve trombone and play with one arm? Maybe some sort of brace that puts the weight of a valve bone on his arm to lessen the tension in his playing hand...does that make sense?

Could he play anything other than trombone to fulfill his musical needs?

Hoping one of us can help...SD
