In Arizona, the auditionee, who first must try out for regionals, gets a sheet that has about 5-6 etudes. These etudes get progressively more difficult. In the regional audition, the player must play the first 2 or 3 etudes and a couple of scales. After looking at scores for regionals, the powers-that-be look for a drastic break in scores going down the section, and that is where they make the cut-off for who is eligible for an all-state audition. At the all-state auditions, the auditionee then plays the rest of the etudes and usually a flat scales, a sharp scale, and a chromatic.
