There are only six tuba players who show up, and those six (2-western TN / 2-middle TN / 2-eastern TN) have already made it into the band.
If $XXX,XXX-paying orchestras can determine a good candidate from listening to the 8th-notes in slower-than-a-march Meistersinger Prelude, I think it's possible to sort six high school players out through review of their execution of the most difficult excerpts from their All-State concert music...
...Besides, it actually gets them practicing their music before they show up.
