I've played both settings, orch and band. The band version is definitely superior. The original opera setting has chorus, no wonder it sounds better with wind instruments who can "sing" as opposed to strings who play , well, instrumentally,. Also notice in the full opera score that there is a small fanfare preceding this music. Not sure why this is never used , because the "Procession" just sort of starts out of nowhere.I actually conducted a perf with band many moons ago , wrote out the fanfare from the score,it was much better.Dave"whose baton is in a jar" Mills
