Actually, Rick, I wasn't writing with you in mind. I am just more than a little fed up with the blanket condemnations of people on the board. Nothing personal. If Arnold Jacobs had played on a Conn 14K Sousaphone and a Bach 24AW, everyone would be clamoring for that set-up. What I think people fail to realize is that Jacobs would have sounded great on that set-up, his York, a beater Yamaha, etc. To rephrase a quote "Equipment is the opiate of the tuba masses". There is no "next best thing", just like a new makeover changes the person who gets one. Work with what you got until a MAJOR job hinges on it. And that probably concerns less than .05% of the people in this country who play tuba. I think Jacobs said "Play the horn in your head and the horn in your hands will produce" or something to that effect. Have Peace.
