I got to toot on one of these last night. It is a HUGE instrument...weighing in at 35 lbs, even the owner needs a stand for it. It has a little ball on the bottom bow that fits nicely inside the hole in the tuba stand.
But anyway....that is one nice tuba. He said that the military uses these (lacquered silver) and that they sell them after 7 years of use, which is how he got it. In my very short exposure during break last night, it was very easy to play and well in tune. I was kind of tight from playing euphonium so I couldn't really loosen up enough to check the below-the-staff range, but he says that is why he likes it so much.
