From the early 1930's "J" series onward...

20,22,24,26 had the recording forward bells
21,23,25,27 had the upright bells
20,21 had 3 top valves
22,23 had 3 front valves
24,25 had 4 top valves
26,27 had 4 front valves

The bells are generally interchangable, and some tubas were sold with both bells.
The model numbers are usually stamped into the bell rings. Serial numbers are
usually found on the 2nd valve body. All had the short throw, offset valves.
Before about 1934, the "J" series MAY have had any combination of the above, but with
regular long throw valves.

The most common models are the 20J and 24J, 22J and 26J are very rare, the rarest
is the 27J.

I have seen hundreds of 20J's, 10 or so 24J's, a few 21J's and 25J's, only 1 22J, and only 1 26J (my own) and no 23J or 27J models, except in catelogs front that era.

I would enjoy hearing from anyone else with a 26J from this era.
