I am surprised by this. All of the people I know that have marched with a corp have unbeleivable tone quality. Specifically on the tuba. I would research which corps have the best instructional staff and look into auditioning there first, if I were going to do this. I think getting good instruction about brass fundementals is key. Top of my list right now would have to be Phantom Regiment. They seem to be really focused on developing music as the basis for their shows, and have hired some serious guns to help teach low brass playing and breathing. Sam Pilafian and Pat Sheridan, JD Shaw. As a tuba player, you can not get better instruction. By the way, the Breathing gym helps a lot.
