has had this ability ever since he was about 5 or 6 years old and began playing the violin.

Now that he's playing the trumpet, he confuses me sometimes because he identifies and discusses pitches that he hears (when conversing with me), but does so transposed to Bb.

I can do it to some extent, but I sometimes need a "prop". I played guitar about 4 or 5 hours a day from age 5 up until I was about 18 years old. When I'm tuning a guitar, I don't need a "pitch-pipe" nor a tuning fork. When it gets close to right, I just "know" where to put it...within about 1-3 cents.

I can identify pitches when I hear them, but if I'm having trouble doing so...If I hold a tuba mouthpiece up to my embouchure (no buzzing necessary) I can identify pitches with confidence.
