As a bass trombone player who has never played tuba I'm curious about something. What is the throat size on many tuba mouthpieces compared with bass trombone? (Say typical orchestral bass trombone throat sizes may be .280-.312.) I know there is a wide variety of each but I'm wondering if tuba throats are proportionately bigger or not. I hear about people boring out their Yeo and Schilke 60 mouthpieces for bass trombone and wonder why. These have huge throats already and require a tremendous amount of air going through a horn that is a straighter shot than a tuba. Also I would think tuba players would want a little more resistance in the throat to approximate the more conical bore that a tuba has.

This isn't meant in a critical way (really!) I'm just curious. I'm trying to learn more about throats and backbores and how they affect different people's playing. Any meandering thoughts on that would be great too.
Jeff, wants to play tuba someday
