The advice of this thread, now a month old, is the best thing that has happened to me since I restarted tuba playing a little more than a year ago. My 65 years old chops have begun to feel alive again, and my low range has become a lot more accessible. What did I change? Stopped playing long notes exercises completely, warming up and relaxing after strenuous things with chromatic flexibility exercises in my "comfort range".
