I would have discussed it later with the tuba player who protested (unimaginable that he would have done that, but oh well), and if just the two of us couldn't resolve the issue, we'd go to the conductor, read the score, find a recording, and figure out what exactly was needed.

I had a band director who, on a first reading of The Cowboys, asked the French horns to back off from their high loud trill (you know, the one marked FFFFF) near the end. Those of us who knew the original were stunned, but accomodated the request -- for that ONE rehearsal. We followed him into his office directly afterwards (yes, me too, even though I was on tuba), made our case, and he came to his senses.

If he hadn't budged, we would have played it was requested. Because, ultimately, it wouldn't have been our fault. He's the conductor.
