There's an inexpensive no-frills (under $50) little preamp called an "Audio Buddy". It's intended use is to provide some gain from low-output mics into computer sound cards. 2 knobs--right and left, 2 LED's per knob (signal and clip) and an on-off button. Has 2 XLR jacks on the back with a "phantom power" switch for mic input and 2 1/4" phone jacks for output. Very small (about 1.5x3.5x5.0) and does the job. I use it as input to my DAT deck and it works just fine.
