The job responsibilities include
1/ Showing up on time, clean, and in the right clothes
2/ Behaving oneself
3/ Playing very well
4/ Doing all of this consistantly

The audition determines who can do #3. The resume hints at and few months on the job determines if the winner can do #'s 1,2, & 4. If the winner drops the ball on #,s 1,2, & 4 (or #3), they will be fired. The orchestra will go back to using the sub they were using before, and the "runner up" from the auditions will probably be contacted...
...I haven't ever heard of this being necessary...
...except I think earlier this year a long-time tuba player in a mid-eastern orchestra may have been having a bit of trouble with #2. I think that tuba player is taking a bit of a leave...
