Rubbing coumpound is pretty abrasive stuff and I'd be afraid to have it anywhere near my horn.

Instead, try one of the "environmentally-conscious" strippers such as 3M Safest Stripper. Hot water alone may work on some older air-dry lacquers, but newer formulations will require something a little more aggressive. Epoxy lacquers are particularly tough and may require the use of methylene chloride-based strippers.

Regardless of what you use, take the proper precautions and make sure that the stripper doesn't get INTO your horn.
