As Sam Gnagey used to point out whenever this thread came up, the
ultimate goal of heavyweight mouthpieces is to damp vibration in the
mouthpiece shell. Lots of extra brass is one way to do this, but
not the only one. Go to the fasteners section of your local
hardware store and look for the tray marked "Rubber Grommets". The
size with a 1 3/16" inside diameter will fit nicely behind the rim of
most tuba mouthpieces. You now have a 39 cent "heavyweight
converter" that is quickly and easily removable. If nothing else,
you can judge for yourself whether it makes a difference for you
without spending $100+.
