If it came down to a decision between two mouthpieces, one comfortable and the other sounding good, I would put the comfortable rim on the good-sounding cup and shank. However, I have found that, even with the same cup/shank and identical rim shapes,
changing the rim diameter changes the sound along with the feel and response (when you think about it, having more or less lip vibrating must affect the sound).
Doug Elliot lets you pick rims, cups, and shanks independently, by the way and he lets you return what doesn't work for you and your horn.
