Consider this, I believe that the piece was written to be premiered in the states, or at least after Dvoraks extended stay in Iowa. He must have had an earful of great players, which leads me to think that he had a different sound in mind. Having played this piece a number of times, I rank it up with Mahler 1, and others, for having that cold, terror-in-the-pit-of-the-stomach-hoping-the-first-note-comes-out feeling. No doubt, many of my collegues will agree with this.
