When I was a lad, people used to shave off every bit of metal on a mouthpiece that was not needed. This was supposed to make the MP ring, thus creating more vibrancy. I don't know if it worked, but when I was 18, I thought it was great because some really great tuba players I knew were doing it. My 2 cents worth. Cheers.
