Actually, I have NEVER had any problem hearing Mr. Deck or the low brass in general on any New York Phil recordings from the past 20 years or so. But I must admit that I don't have a tremendous number of their recordings. Some of the ones that I have heard lately: Prokofiev #5, Mahler #9, and some other Teldec recordings with Masur all have A LOT of low brass sound to my ear, and it sounds absolutely wonderful. Deck on the Prokofiev 5 is audible on every passage, even the pp ones- but he doesn't stick out in an unmusical way. It's just awesome playing! That's weird that it would be different for those recordings that you mentioned. Try a couple more recordings- maybe the ones you have are exceptions.
