The thing I noticed about Melillo's work is that it sounds, basically, like movie music. Two years ago, we did a concert of a Melillo piece called Stormquest (all 15 #$#% movements! My butt really hurt after that concert) There were slow movements, which all sounded the same, fast, sinister movements, which all sounded the same, and fast, exciting movements, which all sounded the same. All in all, I'd say that he writes okay, but I wouldn't want to do a lot of pieces by him, because they lack variety, and for higher level bands, they lack challenge.
