First, I'll give you the obligatory spanking for asking a trombone question on the tuba bbs. This site is really not for discussion of instruments other than tuba. So consider yourself spanked, and after reading this go to your room and stay there for 15 minutes.

Now... I'm afraid it's probably not worth as much as she would like. A new Collegiate is about $400, so if this one is in really good shape, slides like a dream (unlikely) and case in great shape, it might be worth $175-200. However, if the slide's a little worn, the case kind of roughed up and a few dents, scratches, and lacquer missing, you're looking at somewhere between $90-$150 depending on how rough and how needy your buyer. E-Bay is probably your best bet, but old student horns just don't pull down the bucks. Good luck.

P.S. If your neighbor is in a high tax bracket and not really needing quick cash, she might consider donating it to a church or community band and taking the tax break. Not quite as much money, but without the hassle or expense of advertising and corresponding with potential buyers, don't have to ship it, etc.
